How to Measure Your Shirt Size at Home

Ordering clothes online is easy until a shirt arrives too tight across the chest or too short in the body. The good news is that you do not need a tailor to get it right. With a measuring tape and a shirt you already love, you can measure your shirt size at home in about five minutes and order with confidence. This guide walks you through every step, explains what each measurement means and shows you how to compare your numbers with a size chart.

What You Need

  • A soft measuring tape (a ruler or a phone measuring app works in a pinch)
  • A flat surface such as a table, bed or clean floor
  • Your best-fitting shirt in the same style you want to buy: a t-shirt for t-shirts, a button-up for Hawaiian shirts, a sweatshirt for sweaters
  • A pen and paper or your phone’s notes app

Why Measuring a Shirt Beats Measuring Your Body

Most size charts for casual apparel, including ours, list garment measurements: the size of the shirt itself, not the size of your body. Measuring a shirt you already like tells you exactly how much room you prefer, whether that is a snug fit or a relaxed streetwear fit. It removes the guesswork of adding “ease” to body measurements.

Step-by-Step: How to Measure a Shirt

1. Lay the shirt flat

Button it up if it has buttons, then lay it face up on a flat surface. Smooth out wrinkles without stretching the fabric.

2. Measure the chest width

Measure straight across the front of the shirt from side seam to side seam, about 1 inch below the armpits. This is the width (sometimes called “pit to pit”). If a chart lists bust or chest circumference instead, double your width measurement to compare.

3. Measure the body length

Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, right next to the collar, straight down to the bottom hem. This tells you whether the shirt will sit at your waist, hip or lower.

4. Measure the shoulders

Measure from one shoulder seam straight across the back to the other. Shoulder width matters most for button-ups and jerseys, where a seam that sits too far in or out is easy to notice.

5. Measure the sleeve

For short sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve. For long sleeves, sweaters and jackets, measure from the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff.

How to Read a Size Chart

Once you have your numbers, open the 2EZE size chart and find the product type you want. Compare your chest width first, then length. For example, our unisex t-shirt runs from an 18-inch width in size S to a 32-inch width in size 5XL, with length growing from 28 to 35 inches. If your favorite tee measures 21 inches across, you sit between M (20 in) and L (22 in).

A few rules make the decision easier:

  • Chest first, length second. A shirt that is too tight across the chest is uncomfortable; a little extra length is easy to live with.
  • Between sizes? Go by the look you want. Size down for a closer fit, size up for a relaxed streetwear fit.
  • Check each product type separately. A size L in a t-shirt, a baseball jersey and a sweater will not measure the same.

Unisex vs. Women’s Sizing

Unisex shirts are cut straighter and roomier. Women’s tees have a slightly tapered shape and run smaller: our ladies’ tee in size M measures 19.25 inches across, while the unisex M measures 20 inches. Many women prefer one size down in unisex styles for a closer fit, or their usual size for an oversized look.

Size Guides by Product

Every style fits a little differently. These guides cover the details:

Common Measuring Mistakes

  • Measuring a shirt that has stretched out over time instead of one that still fits well.
  • Pulling the tape tight or measuring at an angle.
  • Comparing a flat width to a chart that lists full chest circumference.
  • Using a t-shirt to choose the size of a jersey or sweater.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not have a measuring tape?

Use a piece of string or a phone charger cable to mark the length, then measure it against a ruler or a sheet of printer paper (11 inches long in the U.S.).

Do your shirts shrink?

Cotton can shrink slightly in hot water or a hot dryer. Wash cold and tumble dry low to keep the fit you ordered.

What if my order does not fit?

You can return eligible, unworn items within 30 days of delivery. See our Return & Refunds Policy for details.
