The connection dates back to Back to the Future, released on July 3, 1985, with Fox portraying Marty McFly and Lloyd playing scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown. Their modified DeLorean travels through time when it reaches 88 miles per hour.
The tradition of Back to the Future Day comes from Back to the Future Part II, released on November 22, 1989. In the sequel, Marty and Doc travel to October 21, 2015, making that calendar date a lasting part of the franchise’s history.
